I’ve always been fascinated by lighthouses and foghorns. I like the idea of the lightship bobbing out on the Goodwins keeping shipping safe. That idea made me want to paint something positive that represents lives being saved rather than wrecks and tragedy that we associate with the Goodwin Sands.
Until the middle of the 20th century the Goodwins lightship would have been permanently manned with the crews changing monthly. Swearing and profane language was banned and every man was supplied with a bible and a ‘library of varied and entertaining literature.’
Now I have recently become a boat dweller myself, the idea of saving lives at sea seems an especially poignant one.
